Joe Taylor Gardening Services recently completed a garden makeover for a homeowner in Hucknall, Nottingham. The client’s outdoor space was in need of a refresh, so we removed the old garden turf, rebuilt certain areas and introduced a new garden layout. Our goal was to create a more manageable outdoor environment that the customer could enjoy throughout the year.

Ground Preparation

We began by stripping away the existing lawn using a turf cutter. Once the turf was lifted, our team rotorvated the soil to break it up and then raked the ground to achieve an even surface. This step was critical for making sure any new materials would sit correctly and give the garden a neat finish.

Gravel Board / Retaining Wall

Next, we installed a gravel board retaining wall. This retaining feature helps keep the gravel in place, meaning that it won’t shift into neighbouring flower beds or pathways. By including this feature, we added a strong boundary that holds the stones where they need to be. It also acts as a subtle design detail that separates the gravel from other areas of the garden.

Reworking The Garden Path & Laying Gravel

To create a sturdy footpath, we took up the existing block pavers, re-laid them carefully, and carried out a full jet wash before re-sanding. This process gave the block pavers a renewed appearance, ensuring the path looked appealing and felt safe to walk on. The refreshed garden path now blends seamlessly with the rest of the landscape. The customer also requested a new handrail, which we fitted alongside the footpath for additional support.

Laying The Gravel Membrane

We then laid a membrane across the designated areas before covering them with 20mm gravel. The membrane helps to reduce weed growth, meaning the garden stays tidier over time. The gravel itself provides a decorative yet low-maintenance feature, offering a practical surface that complements the block paving and retaining wall.

This project took a total of ten days to complete, during which time we carefully managed each stage of the garden makeover to cause minimal disturbance. From removing the old turf to installing the final layer of gravel, each task was performed with attention to detail. Our team of garden landscapers is pleased with the outcome, and the client now has an outdoor setting that is easier maintain whilst providing a welcoming feel for guests and family alike.
